Modular Adaptive Surface Orientation System: a surface made of many small segments that each turn on their own to track the sun, cast shade or shed dust.

Each segment sits on its own two-axis gimbal, with a gap of 5% of its characteristic length to its neighbours, so segments never collide and can rotate independently. Segments range from 20 cm² to 2.5 m² each and form arrays from 20 cm² to 30 m² (2–100 kg).

A central controller selects the operating mode; segment controllers drive the yaw and pitch motors of each segment over an RS-485/CAN bus with a shared sensor hub.

Three operating modes

  • Mode A — Solar tracking: maximise sunlight on the active face while avoiding shadows from neighbouring segments.
  • Mode B — Shadow casting: orient the segments to cast maximum shadow on a target zone (shading, cooling).
  • Mode C — Dust deflection: turn the segments edge-on to the wind with a small oscillation to shed dust, and invert them in a storm.
